SIR BURI KIDU LECTURE SERIES.
Law students at the University of Papua New Guinea (UPNG) were given an opportunity to engage in intellectual conversations with judges of the National and Supreme Courts outside of the court setting.
The Sir Buri Kidu Lecture Series, conducted by the Papua New Guinea Centre for Judicial Excellence (PNGCJE) in partnership with UPNG on March 16 gave students an opportunity to meet judges and senior lawyers and learn from the lecture and panel discussions.
“When I went to law school, we never had such opportunity to engage with judges and magistrates and share knowledge in this type of forum,” said PNGCJE Executive Director Dr John Carey.
“I encourage law students to take advantage of this privilege,” he said.
The main presenter was Justice John Logan, a judge of the Federal Court of Australia, President of the Defence Force Discipline Appeal Tribunal, Deputy President of the Administrative Appeals Tribunal and judge of the Supreme and National Courts of Papua New Guinea.
Justice Logan spoke on “The Rule of Law, Economic Development, Peace and Welfare and Good Government” emphasizing that “the rule of law is crucial not just for economic development but for a society’s peace, welfare [order] and good government”.
After the lecture, Justice Logan and Justice Les Gavara-Nanu of the Supreme and National Courts of PNG took part in a panel discussion where they responded to questions from the audience.
The PNGCJE in partnership with the UPNG Law School host the Sir Buri Kidu Lecture Series annually. This year’s series was the first since 2019, after the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted the 2020 and 2021 series.
