The Papua New Guinea Judiciary and the Federal Court of Australia convened a ceremony to reflect on the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) that underpins judicial education through the Australia–Papua New Guinea Justice Partnership (APJP) on June 5, 2026.
The APJP, funded by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, continues to play a vital role in fostering collaboration and professional development between the two judiciaries.
Chief Justice of PNG Sir Gibuma Gibbs Salika highlighted the significant contributions of Federal Court Judges Justice Berna Collier and Justice John Logan. He commended their dedication, work ethic, and case management techniques, which have positively influenced the legal and institutional culture of the PNG Judiciary. Their approach has resulted in more efficient delivery of judgments, strengthening public confidence in the judicial system.
The Chief Justice also expressed gratitude to Chief Justice Debra Mortimer for her ongoing support of the PNG Judiciary. He emphasized the importance of ensuring that Justice Collier, who has served on the Supreme and National Courts of Papua New Guinea for nearly 15 years, continues to play a vital role in shaping the judiciary’s future.
The ceremony was attended by Elizabeth LeBas, Minister Counsellor of the Australian High Commission; Justice Samuel Vandongen of the Federal Court of Australia; Chief Justice Sir Gibuma Gibbs Salika; and Deputy Chief Justice Ambeng Kandakasi.
