Judges attend IOJT Conference in South Korea.
Two Judges from the PNG Judiciary, Justice Joseph Yagi and Justice Nerrie Eliakim are currently attending the 11th International Organizational for Judicial Training (IOJT) conference in South Korea along with the PNG Centre for Judicial Excellence (PNGCJE) Assistant Director, Mrs. Stacey Levakia-Vali and PNGCJE Program Officer for Judges Mr. Tongia Kekebogi.
The theme of the conference is “Judicial Education at a Crossroads: Preparing for the Future of the Judiciary, Embracing Human Rights, Technology and Effective Pedagogy” and is hosted for four days from November 4th – November 7th, 2024.
The IOJT is an International Organization for Judicial training institutes which aims at providing its members with the opportunity to learn from one another, to share innovative approaches to the education of the judiciary and to build a strong network of people involved in judicial education.
It was established in 2002 to promote the rule of law by supporting the work of judicial education institutions around the world. The mission of the IOJT is realized through international and regional conferences and other exchanges that provide opportunities for judges and judicial educators to discuss strategies for establishing and developing training centres, designing effective curricula, developing faculty capacity, and improving teaching methodology.
The organization is governed by a General Assembly of its members which meets every 2-3 years during the international conference. There is an elected Board of Governors which consists of an Executive Committee, Regional Deputy Presidents, additional Deputy Presidents and Governors. The IOJT has 125 member-institutes from 77 countries.
The PNGCJE became a member of the IOJT back in 2013 when the Chief Justice Sir Gibbs Salika submitted the membership form allowing the PNGCJE to become a member.
