
UNODC and the Papua New Guinea Judiciary present

Background
As a follow up to the Regional Judicial Conference held in Nauru from 24 to 26 July 2024 and the adoption of the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-being on 25 July 2024, the Papua New Guinea Judiciary and UNODC and Commonwealth Secretariat will host the International Conference on Judicial Integrity and Judicial Well-being from 20 to 22 August 2025 in Port Moresby. This conference will be supported by the Papua New Guinea Centre for Judicial Excellence and UNODC under the framework of the Pacific Platform on Anti-Corruption: the Teieniwa Vision and aligned with the objectives of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), particularly article 11, which underscores the importance of enhancing integrity within the judiciary.
Building on the goals of the Global Judicial Integrity Network, established by UNODC in 2018 and on the outcomes of the Regional Judicial Conference held in Nauru from 24 to 26 July 2024, the conference will bring together judges, judicial authorities, and experts from around the world, with a particular emphasis on the Pacific region. Participants will discuss emerging trends and challenges related to judicial integrity and well-being.
Key topics to be explored during the conference include Judicial Integrity and Judicial Well-being, including how they are interconnected and strengthen one another. The event aims to identify additional challenges, strengthen existing networks, and deepen insights into the needs of judges and judiciaries, fostering a more robust and integrity-driven judicial system.

Expected Outcomes:
The purpose of the event is to bring together high-level representatives of judiciaries and through expression of interest younger generation magistrates and judges to discuss existing and emerging challenges in the region and beyond:
- Enhanced Understanding: Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the psychological and technological challenges facing the judiciary and their impact on judicial well-being and integrity. This will include a focus on mental health, stress management, and the role of leadership in fostering a culture of well-being, as well as the opportunities technology offers for improving efficiency and reducing stress.
- Actionable Strategies: The conference will generate practical recommendations and strategies for enhancing judicial resilience, ethical decision-making, and overall well-being. This will include developing strategies for implementing judicial well-being programs, addressing mental health challenges, and using technology effectively to support judicial functions.
- Nauru Declaration Implementation Plan: Participants will work towards identifying the parameters for drafting the commentary on the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-Being. This plan will outline specific actions, guidelines, and recommendations for implementing the declaration’s key principles, ensuring a global commitment to improving judicial well-being across the judiciaries around the world.
