Papua New Guinea Judiciary to host landmark International Judicial Conference on Integrity and Well-Being

The Papua New Guinea Judiciary, in partnership with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), will host the International Judicial Conference on Integrity and Judicial Well-being from 20 to 22 August 2025 at APEC Haus in Port Moresby.

Held under the theme “From Principles to Action: Advancing Judicial Well-being as the Foundation for Integrity, Resilience, and Public Trust,” the conference follows the successful Regional Judicial Conference in Nauru and adoption of the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-Being in July 2024. It is also supported by the Papua New Guinea Centre for Judicial Excellence and the Pacific Platform on Anti-Corruption, aligned with the objectives of the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC), Article 11.

This landmark event will convene judges, magistrates, judicial officers, academics and legal experts from Africa, the Caribbean, Pacific, Europe, Asia, and Americas to address emerging challenges and trends affecting judicial integrity and the well-being of judges. Key themes include:

  • The implementation of the Nauru Declaration on Judicial Well-Being
  • Psychological aspects of judicial life, including stress, bullying, and harassment
  • Judicial leadership and resilience
  • The impact of technology on the judiciary

Justice John Carey, Judge Administrator for the PNG Centre for Judicial Excellence, stated:
“This conference reflects Papua New Guinea’s leadership and commitment within the judiciary to supporting judicial officers’ well-being which is connected with promoting judicial integrity. We are honoured to provide a platform for global dialogue on such critical matters.”

The conference aims to produce actionable strategies to enhance judicial wellness, including an implementation plan following on the Nauru Declaration. With plenary sessions, panels, and interactive forums, the event will foster cross-border collaboration, knowledge-sharing, and the strengthening of global judicial networks.
